What happens during the Venice Art Biennale?
During even-numbered years, the organizing committee of the Venice Biennale invites a guest curator to lead two main international art exhibitions spread across two sites, the Arsenale and Giardini, united by a single theme for the year. The exhibition and affiliated shows including the national participations and official collateral events generally run from mid-April until late Novembers, and a basic ticket for entry to the Biennale includes one-time entry to each site. What does “Foreigners Everywhere” mean?
The title of the 60th International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale is “Stranieri Ovunque”, with the official translation of Foreigners Everywhere. Curated by Brazil-based Adriano Pedrosa, currently artistic director of the São Paulo Museum of Art, the 2024 edition pays special attention to artists whose works have never appeared in the main exhibition before, and artists
“The expression Stranieri Ovunque has several meanings. First of all, that wherever you go and wherever you are you will always encounter foreigners— they/we are everywhere. Secondly, that no matter where you find yourself, you are always truly, and deep down inside, a foreigner.”
Review
This was only my second time visiting the Venice Biennale — the 2022 edition themed around ‘Milk of Dreams’ was my first — so that’s the only point of reference I have to offer.
